PEMBROKE — Hurricane Matthew interrupted the original swearing in of Pembroke’s long-awaited new mayor, but after all the redo of elections and legal battles, Greg Cummings will have a public ceremony Wednesday.
Cummings ends Pembroke’s 18-month streak without a mayor at the event being held at The University of North Carolina at Pembroke’s Entrepreneurship Incubator at 202 Main St. in Pembroke. It will be held at 5:30 p.m.
Cummings has already been sworn in officially with a private session held Oct. 12.
“He was sworn in mid-week following the hurricane. This was a smaller, informal, impromptu event,” Pembroke City Manager Tyler Thomas said.
In September, the state Board of Elections upheld Cummings’ victory over protests from runner-up Allen Dial. Councilman Channing Jones has been serving as mayor pro tem since the death of Pembroke’s late mayor, Milton Hunt, in April 2015.
