Homecoming activities taking place at FMA this week

A full slate of activities are taking place at Flora Macdonald Academy this week with everything leading up to Friday night’s Homecoming dance that will take place with the presentation of the Homecoming Court and the coronation of the new queen.

Activities actually started on Monday with a bonfire on the FMA softball field at 6:30 p.m. Students were to dress up in pajamas for the day.

Yesterday, students were asked to dress up in camouflage.

Today, it was Wacky Dress Up Day for students. At 6 p.m., the Cougars’ varsity boys’ basketball team will travel to the Veritas Sports Academy in Greensboro at 6 p.m.

Tomorrow, Thursday, it’s Nerd Dress Up Day for all students.

Friday is filled with a huge assortment of activities starting with Spirit Day/Blue-White Day with students dressing up in FMA colors. A pep rally takes place in the gym at 1:30 p.m., followed by a Pee Wee basketball game at 6 p.m. and a tentative Alumni basketball game at 7 p.m.

The Homecoming Dance will begin at 7 p.m. but before the dance, students and the public are invited to a chili and cornbread supper in the school’s dining hall, beginning at 5:30 p.m.

On Saturday, the big day begins with the FMA middle school girls’ basketball team playing Cape Fear Christian Academy at 11 a.m. in the FMA gym, followed by the middle school boys’ basketball team playing Riverside Christian Academy. During that time, the FMA Booster Club will be offering lunch at the concession stand, along with chicken and fish plates.

At 2 p.m. that afternoon, the Lady Cougars’ varsity basketball team will take to the court to face Waccamaw Academy. The boys’ varsity game will follow at 3:30 p.m., culminating the days’ events.

Boys slide by Trinity; girls defeated

The boys’ and girls’ Cougars and Lady Cougars basketball teams continue to tune up their game as they prepared for Homecoming this Saturday at the Flora Macdonald Academy.

The Cougars’ nipped Trinity last Tuesday night, 86-85, but the girls’ were beaten, 72-22, in their game.

In the boys’ game, four players hit in double figures with Luke Cothron leading the pack for the Cougars with a team-high 22 points, followed by Joel Hendrick, Lateef McMullen and Jeff Wherry, all with 15 points apiece. McMullen hit three three-pointers in the contest.

Senior Lady Cougar Kathleen Wood pumped in 11 points as FMA dropped to 1-16 on the season.
