LUMBERTON — Authorities today are trying to determine why a Pembroke man fled from a state Highway Patrol officer in a car chase Thursday that ended with a head-on collision that killed a Shannon woman and severely injured her grandchild.
The Fayetteville Observer reported Friday, that the grandchild, Emmanuel Christopher Hunt, died of his injuries at Duke Hospital in Durham, according to a family member.
Shelda Faye Hunt was killed and three others injured Thursday morning after Calvin Christopher Jones sped away from Trooper P.A. Collins on N.C. 211 near the Mayfair subdivision. The patrol say the chase last less than a minute and covered less than a mile.
Hunt, 35, of Shannon Road, was the front-seat passenger in a 1993 Honda driven by her 17-year-old daughter Maranda Hunt, said Highway Patrol 1st Sgt. Freddie Johnson. Also in the car was Maranda’s 8-month-old son.
Johnson said Maranda Hunt was transported to Southeastern Regional Medical Center, where she was treated for minor injuries and released. Her child was also transported to the hospital with serious injuries and later airlifted to Duke Medical Center. The boy’s name was not released and his condition was not available at presstime.
Johnson said that although the wreck is still under investigation, Jones, 21, of the 700 block of Sunrise Road, has been charged with involuntary manslaughter, felony aggravated death by vehicle, felony speeding to elude arrest, and driving while impaired. He was also transported to Southeastern Regional Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.
Johnson said that at 8:14 a.m., Trooper P.A. Collins got out of his car and approached two “suspicious” vehicles parked in the playground area of the Mayfair subdivision, and one of the vehicles, a gold Oldsmobile Alero driven by Jones, went the wrong-way on a one-way entrance road into the subdivision, ran a stop sign, and turned west toward Red Springs on N.C. 211.
“Trooper Collins tried to catch up, and as he got close he saw the accident occur,” Johnson said. “The vehicle tried to pass another vehicle at a speed Collins estimated at 80 mph. The driver (Maranda Hunt) of an oncoming vehicle saw what was happening and took evasive action. She pulled to the shoulder of the road, but was hit head-on.”
Johnson said that Collins immediately stopped and called for fire and EMS units to assist.
“All of this happened within a mile of where the chase began,” Johnson said. “It all happened within one minute.”
Collins reportedly interviewed Jones but he could not be reached for comment. Some traces of marijuana reportedly were found in Collins’ vehicle.
The collision destroyed both vehicles.
