To the Editor:

I live in a rural area outside Red Springs city limits and have to buy my electricity from the town. I pay no taxes, nor do I have voting rights in matters regarding Red Springs, however, I pay my electric bill to the town.

After repeated attempts to buy my electricity from a local cooperative, the Town of Red Springs refuses to relinquish my home. I own a house approximately 2400 square foot and my average monthly electric bill runs between $700-$800 a month. Last month, for example, my electric bill was $869.62.

An energy audit has been done by the town and no infiltrations can be found to explain my high energy cost. After repeated attempts to find relief by contacting John Ray a town commissioner, I have been told, “there is nothing I can do, but thanks for calling!” John McNeill, a commissioner and a candidate for Mayor, has stated that he will not release anyone from the town, regardless of the circumstance.

These individual, John Ray and John McNeill, are not going to help me because I cannot vote for them. My question to your readership is, “How many others, like me, are there around Red Springs with the same problem?” This is taxation without representation. It is against this very thing that America was founded! I demand my FREEDOM, and if others find themselves in the same situation, please contact me at PO Box 748, Red Springs, NC 28377.

It’s simple. The town of Red Springs is stealing from me and my family, while holding not only me, but others, hostage with high utility rates, and no voice for opposition.
