Flora Macdonald Academy announced this week that Elizabeth (Beth) Fox Lee will become the school’s headmistress in June 2010.

Lee will assume the helm from Paschal Stewart who is retiring after more than 15 years of service to the private college preparatory academy.

Stewart joined Flora Macdonald first as a teacher and then as headmaster following a successful teaching and coaching career with the Scotland County School System.

“Mr. Stewart is a part of our family and we hope he will come back often,” said Lynn Hendrix, Board of Trustee’s member and chairman of the Search Committee. “He has done an outstanding job for Flora Macdonald Academy. He and his wife, Margaret Blue Stewart, are highly respected by all.”

Lee was appointed this month to become headmistress at the conclusion of the school year. She has 37 years of experience in teaching and administration in the Cumberland County School System. Currently, Lee is the Assistant Principal of Stoney Point Elementary in Fayetteville.

“Beth Lee has already impressed us with her knowledge and energy,” Hendrix said. “We are excited to have Ms. Lee designated as our new headmistress. She has great ideas and the ability to implement them successfully. Her track record in education speaks for itself with 23 years as a principal in the public school system.”

Lee’s reputation as an educator and administrator are well known throughout the area. She retired from Cumberland County Schools in July 2008.

“I can hardly wait to start at Flora McDonald Academy! It is a beautiful school with a unique historical charm. I am excited to have the opportunity to work and learn with the children, teachers, and parents at the school. Flora McDonald Academy has an exceptional academic program with a warm culture that makes it a special learning environment like no other in the community – what a thrill to be a part of it!”

Lee has three grown sons. She is married to Quentin Smith and lives in Fayetteville.
