The Women’s Fund is an established fund in Robeson County that helps underemployed and unemployed women go to college to start or advance their careers in the fields of health care or education. The Women’s Fund is coordinated by the Women’s Economic Equity (WEE) Project of the Center for Community Action. Chapters of the Fund are being created all over Robeson County to specifically support women in their own areas in entering or advancing their careers in these fields.
The fields of health care and education were selected because that is where there are job and career opportunities that pay a living wage with which women can support their families and children. Many jobs, particularly in the service economy, do not lift women out of poverty. They can work full time in many jobs and still live in poverty.
At the meeting, two participants in the Women’s Fund spoke of the impact that the support from the fund has had in their lives. Angelina Phillips and Julia Kennedy of Lumberton spoke of going to Robeson Community College with the support of the Women’s Fund and how much it meant to them.
The Red Springs Chapter of the Women’s Fund will meet monthly. All women and men are invited to attend the regular meetings. The next meeting will be Thursday, July 22nd at 6:30 PM at the American Legion Building.
