The pastor of a church in Red Springs was one of two people killed Monday morning in a wreck in rural Robeson County, officials said.

Fred Nelson Gibbs and Brittany Graybill were killed after a car Graybill was riding in failed to yield at an intersection, said 1st Sgt. Freddy Johnson of the N.C. Highway Patrol.

A third person was injured.

Johnson said Graybill, 20, of Clayton, was in a 1998 Ford Mustang driven by Marshall Clifford Heckel that did not yield at the intersection of Rennert and McQueen roads.

The Mustang, traveling east on McQueen Road, struck a 1993 Nissan pickup on Rennert Road driven by Gibbs, 40, of Lumberton, Johnson said.

The passenger side of the Mustang and the passenger side of the pickup collided, he said.

Gibbs, a reverend at Living Waters Assembly of God, died at the scene, Johnson said, and Graybill died after being flown to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center in Fayetteville.

Gibbs’ church is at 2008 McQueen Road, just under a mile and a half from the intersection.

Heckel’s injuries were not life-threatening, Johnson said. He was taken to Southeastern Regional Medical Center in Lumberton. Heckel, 21, is also from Lumberton, Johnson said.

Johnson said the wreck occurred at 7:50 a.m. and was called in by a passing motorist.

Johnson said all three were wearing their seatbelts.

“He just failed to yield the right of way,” Johnson said of Heckel.

The intersection of Rennert and McQueen roads is north of Lumberton, between the city and Red Springs.

Funeral arrangements for Gibbs and Graybill were incomplete Monday afternoon.

Gibbs’ funeral will be handled by Boles Funeral Home & Cremation of Red Springs. Graybill’s will be handled by Revels Funeral Home in Pembroke.
